A Little About Me...
Hi! I'm Lauren, the illustrator and founder of Thriftbox. I am the mum to a wonderful little girl, Hazel, and wife to my best pal Matt. Here are some nuggets of info about me!
I'm a big lover of cats, and could easy be that crazy cat lady
I love to play video games, ever since my older brother introduced me to Super Mario Bros 2 when I was little. Some of my favourite titles are Fallout 3, Ni No Kuni (1&2), Super Smash Bros and all Zelda games
Floral patterns and bold colours are my all time favourites
I love to watch anime and read manga, with my current favourites being Berserk, Attack on Titan, Fullmetal Alchemist, Junji Ito, Evangelion and One Punch Man.
I always have to have my nails painted
Japan is one of my favourite places in the world, and I would love to live there for a few years
I have a huge love for shark films, with Deep Blue Sea being my ultimate guilty pleasure (Jaws is my all time favourite film)
My favourite film directors are Hayao Miyazaki, Wes Anderson and Christopher Nolan
I love board games, and I even proposed to my husband whilst playing a customised quest that I had made in our favourite Fallout board game!
I wrote my university dissertation about the stereotyping and representation of women within animation, comparing Walt Disney films to Studio Ghibli, and I would love to rewrite it as a book one day.
Thriftbox was first thought up in the summer of 2013, when I rediscovered my love of designing, creating and sewing. It wasn't until the following summer that I decided to dedicate my time to my little crafty business. Since opening up my first Etsy online shop, I've picked up graphic design skills along the way, and have created many different illustrated mugs, badges, print and even nail decals. I am hoping that my skills and stock line expands in the future!
Luna, aka Trumbles, came into my life back in April 2015, when I finally decided to adopt. I have always known that I wanted a black cat, which stemmed from my love of the Japanese film, Kiki's Delivery service. She is an extremely sassy diva who loves a good cuddle and a drink of any cup of tea available. Trumbles has been the Thriftbox mascot since she was patient enough to sit still for the camera, and continues to be my loyal desk cat whenever I am attempting to work. Her side eye is something of wonder.
The newest addition to the family is Goku, aka Little Man (oh, the irony). I rescued Goku back in 2016, after he was found abandoned by his mum at only 3 weeks old. He came to live with us at 6 weeks old, and has settled in well. He spends most of his time pestering his older sister, napping and eating biscuits. He is a complete scamp who loves to chase his own tail and chew all the cushions in the house. Even though he can be quite nervous, he loves being around people that he knows, and is always ready for a chin rub.
Samwise, aka Sammidge, came to us in February 2020 from a little adoption centre in Bradford. He was so sad when we first brought him home, but now spends his days snoozing on his dad whenever he can, grazing on biscuits for most of the day, and being an all round chilled little kitty. He will come as get into bed with us on a night and stay there until morning.
